This weekend we have been treated to some fantastic displays of the Northern Lights as the Earth was buffeted by the biggest geomagnetic storm of the year so far. The storm, which rated as a G3 or strong level storm, arrived at about 2:30am MT on 5 April and gave rise to strong magnetic disturbances that are now subsiding.

The storm was caused by a solar flare ejecting charged particles directly towards the Earth. Some of these particles are captured by the Earth�s magnetic field, eventually being channelled into the upper atmosphere, where they excite rarefied air molecules to produce the dazzling displays we are all looking to see.

Some of our subscribers managed to see the display. Jack Bawden shared with us some of his first attempts at capturing the aurora - managing to capture the purple emissions from nitrogen. More can be seen here!

Jeffery Wallace has shared with us some of his first attempts of photographing the aurora and also managed to capture some nitrogen emissions.
